Canon 35mm f/1.4 lens

I got a new lens recently - the Canon 35mm f/1.4. I’d wanted this lens for ages having used the 24-70 and 70-200mm lenses extensively this year. Great lenses but I knew the 35mm focal range was exactly my cup of tea and I have long been excited about playing with the shallow depth of field you get from a f/1.4 lens.

I wasn’t disappointed.

There are a few complaints online about how soft this lens can be at f/1.4 but I haven’t had any problems. You’re bound to get soft at that aperture. The shots below are all shot at the f/1.4 - 1.8 range, with minimal sharpening/post in Photoshop. Once again, my son Harvey is the star of the show.

Hi Matthew - I have been in contact with you earlier this year when I found your website...I truly love your work. I see you have the fantastic f1.4 35mm - enjoy and I look forward to your images with this lens. I used to own the 50mm f1.4 but being a hobbiest presently had to sell it amongst others in order to attain the Canon's L lens the 24-105mm f4 for which many of my images have been taken through this lens plus Sigma's 70-200mm f2.8 as seen on my website www.doverjaquesphotography.com.

All the very best to you in 2011 - above all I truly hope you continue to love what you do as that is the most important aspect I feel. Gina

Dear Matthew,

I wholeheartedly agree with you. The 35mm f/1.4 L is my favourite lens and 35mm is probably my favourite focal length. I'd say it most closely resembles how we see (I know classically it's meant to be 50mm). The optical quality is stunning and, In combination with the wide aperture, it produces breathtaking images.

Super blog by the way (I think I need to get mine tarted up a bit - haha!)

All the best,

David
